"Pretty Girl"
Zoey Leven uses the song "Pretty Girl" to tell a story in a non-traditional storytelling way. The music just weaves these tales and it has this cool, chill way about it being somewhere between rock, pop and even some of that coffee shop jazz. Edie Brickell and The Cardigans come to mind as some of the first influences.
This music video is particularly good because the main character spends time dancing around, playing with a full band and playing acoustic outside as well. But at one point there is a line about drinking water out of a wine glass and you can see that happening, so to have it where the video is displaying what the words are singing is pretty neat.
"Pretty Girl" also has this line that comes in more than once: "You've been such a butthead lately" and this might in fact be the first time I've ever heard the word "butthead" used in a song. I've heard way too many songs and I can't think of one off the top of my head that also uses that word. The way it feels like mildly insulting but also just as a compliment is so perfect.
This song, overall, is about a relationship with someone else and the "Pretty Girl" in the title goes with Zoey Leven. It has the perspective that Zoey Leven is singing about the pretty girl and I think that's a good reminder that beauty is often in the eye of the beholder (as the old saying goes) and so everyone is pretty in someone else's eyes.
