Music Review // Jacob Well "9999"

"9999" has an upbeat rock sound to it which is borderline pop.   At times, through the singing and the song structure I am reminded of The Wallflowers and bands that general time frame, yet there is this more modern appeal as well.  Jacob Well can make me think about bands like Neon Trees and this song should be on the radio right now as well.

One of my favorite things about this song is that Jacob Well sings the title of "nine thousand nine hundred and ninety nine".   He does this because it's about how those times "everything worked itself out", but this is the one time when everything isn't okay.   In life and relationships it sometimes feels like bad things happen but you don't look at the law of averages and that's what this song is about.

You can do something 9,999 times and it can be the way you want it to be but that one time it goes wrong, that's the time you choose to focus on.  I'm not sure if this is a character fault or not though because at least if you do something and it's wrong you know how to improve upon it and what not to do in the future.  All those times it went right and you didn't really notice, those didn't teach you as much.

The most difficult part of all of this, perhaps, is that you need to recognize the times when something goes wrong and then compare it with the times that it went right.  If you're in a relationship and every date ends in a fight, or at least nine out of ten do, then that's a different sign.  I believe that people (especially me) see things more for where we haven't been yet and not how far we've come and Jacob Well definitely is on the same wavelength with "9999".
