Music Review // Martha and the Muffins "For What It's Worth"
Two things which this song might do right away are both inform the listener of the song title and original artist of this song as "For What It's Worth" (originally by Buffalo Springfield) seems to be a song widely known for it's "Everybody stop listen what's that sound / Everybody look what's going down" chorus more than anything else. Listening to this cover by Martha and the Muffins reminds me a lot of when Marky Mark covered "Wild Side".
Through a slow groove there is this dinging within the music. This cover feels a bit like the original but also like a cover you'd hear a piece of in a movie trailer and go "Oh, I know that song but it's not by that artist". That seems to happen more and more these days, so I wouldn't be surprised to see it happen eventually with this song and this specific version of it.
During this music video two characters walk around with guns for heads. It creates an interesting visual (reminds me of horses) but also seems to be a commentary on the United States and why there are so many shootings. One thing I'm not going to do is pretend like I have answer for why that is. When I was a kid in middle school I had access to buying a gun and this was in a time before it felt like this was a common occurrence.
The message of Buffalo Springfield seems to remain true, even all these years later. We all need to take a moment, stop and think about what's really going on out there. Not just with this gun violence, but in general. My dad voted from Trump because he said Biden was too old, but does that make Trump young? We're in an election year and we have different sides of the same shit coin. We all need to look at what's going on, now perhaps more than ever.
