Music Review // Loryn Taggart "Walls"
The sound of Loryn Taggart is one which you must wait until the end of this song to fully experience. At first, I was also a little bit confused by the lyrics inside of "Walls", but like a story playing out if you just wait until the end it can also make sense. Through pop rock and a unique voice, Loryn Taggart has synths come through with this song at first but by the end you'll witness the big triumph of horns.
One of the first lines in the chorus that will stick with you is: "Welcome to the museum of pain / This is the exhibit I made in your name". When I first heard this I thought about how when relationships end you don't always move out. Maybe one person moves out, but the other stays, so you have that person who is now divorced from someone that this house reminds them of-- they're in the corners of the walls. I did think about that a lot at first, but then as the song went on my mind shifted.
By the end, when the horns come in, you can hear the lines: "I share the walls with the people you used to love and I hope that he can tear them down". This makes this song feel like the ex-lover in question is a museum of sorts and so all of these people who he also did wrong are in there and on display. Lyrically, this does feel like the song "Ex-Girlfriend" by No Doubt only it paints the picture of the exes in a more artistic manner.
That last idea though of "I hope that he can tear them down" isn't just about the ex but can be seen as being about the new person in your life. You can hope that the new person can help you to heal and forget about that other person. So, much like the title of "Walls" itself, this song does work on many levels, is just a joy to listen to and you can get as deep as you want with it all.
