Music Review // Avery Raquel "You"
Avery Raquel begins the song "You" with these synth tones which feel delicate like glass. Soulful singing brings us into what can be described as R&B, as it has some of that Nelly Furtado in it (who I still only really know for the "I'm Like a Bird" song) But as it goes on I can also hear some jazz, Bossa nova style like Isabella Mendes makes.
As the song sings "You're a mystery" it also wonders "Do you want the same things that I want for you". Having a song about "You" is not something unheard of because there are plenty of songs out there with this title, but I'm not sure anyone has ever quite touched upon this subject the same way that Avery Raquel has.
What I find most interesting about this song lyrically is that it comes at a crossroads but when that is exactly isn't clear. On one hand, this song could be about the beginning of a relationship- one where you know someone but are just getting to know them. You wonder whether or not this person wants the same things as you, so you're questioning whether or not to pursue this at all.
But at the same time it feels as if this could just be someone in the middle of a relationship and unsure what to do. Maybe you've been dating for long enough now where you're thinking about marriage or moving in together and you're wondering if the other person is as well. It's not always an easy subject to bring up, but now with this song you kind of have the ice breaker, so bring it up and solve the mysteries.
