Music Review // Jovin Webb "Bottom of a Bottle"

Everyone has heard the blues in their life and has something which they connect it with.  For me, I think about walking the streets in downtown New Orleans and the music coming from the bars.   This very much describes what the sound of Jovin Webb is like and not just because the music happens to be about drinking in a bar.

With harmonicas and those blues guitar riffs, Jovin Webb examines what it's like to be known by your local bartender.   As the chorus says about the title: "That's where I'll be hangin' 'round".    But as much as this song is about drinking and finding comfort in that act, it also seems to be somewhat of a cautionary tale.  Lines like "Forget about that woman / I can set you free" show how the bottle can take over your life and become more than you might have expected.

By the end of the song there is the line "Might even convince you / That I won't do you wrong", which just makes me think that for the whole song we should have been paying closer attention and known that this was not a good thing and we shouldn't rely on alcohol so much.   So what might have started as an innocent song about drinking turned into a cautionary tale about alcoholism and I think that's appropriate because we all need to have that self awareness.

This music video takes place inside of a bar, though it can move from the bathroom to the stage and then the bar itself.   It kind of shows that perspective of both the musician on stage and the rowdy audience members who might have had too much to drink.   Bonus points to this video for having that Budweiser ad behind the stage.   When you find yourself at the bottom of a bottle though, this pure blues song by Jovin Webb might be your sign to get out.
