Music Reviews // DZ Deathrays "Easing Out Of Control"

DZ Deathrays have such a great way of making fuzzy rock n roll that I don't feel like I've heard an album like this since before 2010.  While music seems to be going in a certain direction- rock n roll at least- the DZ Deathrays seem to be channeling that MPLS sound ala Soul Asylum.  (Though DZ Deathrays are from Australia).   Songs like "Pissing In The Breeze" will not only get stuck in your head, but they will also make you think about artists past (and present) such as Local H, which is someone I feel like we don't hear enough about these days as an influence because even though they're still active they've been making music since the 1990's.

Throughout these fuzzy melodies I can also hear sounds like The Damn Personals and it's just this era of rock n roll which feels forgotton in modern times.  There is a lot of energy in here as well and by the end of the album, with the song "Demolition", you'll really begin to hear the DZ Deathrays not sound like other artists but rather you'll begin to hear their own sound forging.  Having that sound that pulls you in because of bands you know but then will have you sticking around because it takes on its own is just what music should be all about.

Years ago (maybe even decades) when music was still on MTV there was a special they did about South By South West and just how the music scene was taking off in Austin, Texas but also in a very big rock n roll way.   There was one band that they profiled, who I often struggle to remember their name, but it just has that same idea of rocking and rolling.  I also find it worth noting that the song "Ordinary Life" on here reminds me of Trail of Dead, who kind of blew up after SXSW as well, so if you're looking for something like a SXSW rock n roll sound via Australia then this album is definitely for you.
