Music Review // Haeun Joo "Just Gravity" (577 Records)

There is a strong piano sound to this one right away.  It can just feels like we're moving around inside in Spring time, very bright and sunny-like.   But then the percussion joins in.  It can feel as if the two forces are working together, but at times it can also feel as if they are at odds.  The piano keys get a bit deeper and the banging of the percussion grows a bit more primal.   This also makes it feel like we're going into more of a jazz sound, as the added percussion gives the piano a bit of direction.

The bass in the pianos can drop off like thunder, but other times it can just feel so light, like we're waking around on clouds.   The traditional bass line comes out during "Ellie The Paw" and this just feels like a smoky bar type of jazz sound as well, which is a lot of fun.   As we go into "Authentic Taste" this becomes more thoughtful, a sort of reflective feeling as the piano keys come through like therapy.   "Until The End" has higher tones which make the mood feel lighter as well, and really if you're listening to this one you can hear those changes which can make the way you hear it all change as well.

Cymbals will come in at times as well, to enhance the sensation of it all, but Haeun Joo has just seemed to have found a way to create the piano as the lead instrument and shape the sound around it with the help of other instruments, though mainly it feels to be percussion coming in along the way.   This can just feel like such a lovely journey that if you enjoy the music of the piano and especially feel that way when it crosses over into jazz at times, then this is definitely the type of album you need to have on when the mood hits just right.
