Music Review // Sophia Bouvier "POISON APPLE"
When you think about songs and their lyrics, typically when there is a problem between two people the song takes one of the sides: either it's "I was wrong" or it's a matter of "You were wrong". Right away into this song by Sophia Bouvier you get the idea that the other person was in the wrong, but at the same time, as the lyrics say: "I was tempted by your castle / And I bit the poison apple". This makes it feel like the author knows that what they were doing wasn't for the best, but they did it anyway because of love, promises of things getting better, etc.
There are just so many different aspects to relationships- and they are complex- so to have a take in this song which doesn't feel like it's black and white is so refreshing. The idea of titular "POISON APPLE" also makes me think both about fairy tales (like Snow White) and The Bible because of the Garden of Eden. How deep you want to go into these lyrics is up to you, but it could be about ether religion or Disney, especially with lines like: "Openly delusional and I obeyed".
"POISON APPLE" is a guitar-driven song that just has this cool swagger about it. I immediately hear some similarities with Elle King and the "Ex's & Oh's" song, though it is not exactly like that. Sophia Bouvier has a lot of the elements in this song which make up songs that generally sound like they're in that fairy tale realm or like when Forgive Durden sings about Alice In Wonderland. It just has a certain vibe that can be real and down to earth, but also rooted in fantasy.
As humans we are prone to making mistakes but we don't discuss our free will enough. Sometimes you can know that something is bad for you, that the apple is poisoned as this song says, but you can still go after it any way for various reasons. This song isn't about making mistakes as much as it is about making bad decisions with good intentions. I think we have all been there at some point in our life and this is just a rocking anthem to help us celebrate that we all can share in that.
