Music Review // Ellie Heath "Too Old (For This Shit)"
I saw a post on social media recently where someone asked why bands who haven't released new music in a long time are still touring. I had to explain that this was because some of us still enjoy that album from 1990's and will still go experience it performed live. There is a great stigma in our society, and not just in music but it is in music as well, about getting older. No one wants to age gracefully, but to be fair, most people don't even want to age.
Ellie Heath brings this all up in this song, especially remarking about how when you get older versus when you're a child you no longer have summer vacation. I think as kids we have these ideas of freedom growing up, but we don't really realize how good we have it when we're not paying bills and worrying about a lot of the things that as adults we have to worry about. If you're reading this and your job is being a student: enjoy it.
In addition to getting older in general, this song feels like a good way to let people know that as musicians it is okay to get older and create music still. While it might feel like a lot of musicians peaked at one point in their life (even if it wasn't because of a young death) I still feel like artists such as Neil Young are putting out great music still. On a not so mainstream stage, Bob Mould is another example of that.
As someone who grew up in the 1990's and is old now, I just feel like too many bands have that mentality of "Well, we had that one hit then but what can we offer now?" where as I prefer a song like this because people do age and it should be addressed in song form. With big synth pop rock sounds, sort of like later years No Doubt, this song is sure to make you think back on your life if you do happen to be one of the older people listening to it, but just know that getting older isn't bad it just makes you experienced.
