Music Review // Jont "The One I’ve Never Met Who I Long For"
Jont has this way about creating songs which feel like they're part of a genre or sound like another band, but yet just come back to sounding like Jont. This song has a very fast pace which makes me think of The Strokes, but it's also in that guitar way that I like about both rockabilly and Green Day. If you take those different elements and mix them together in an upbeat way, then you're getting close to how this sounds but it still has that something extra in it.
The lyrics to this song are interesting because the chorus says: "When this night has reached the end / May I be smiling at the ceiling / Feeling connected to something oh so much more / Than the one I’ve never met who I long for". In this way, I feel like sometimes the fantasy- that idea- about someone is greater than the actual concept itself. We have these ideas of what that perfect person might be like and once we meet someone who we think might be that, sometimes after getting to further know them that illusion fades as well. So it's nice to live in that time where you're not yet disproven.
At the same time, there is this verse which says: "I’m lying / I met you just the other night / Yeah, it felt so good it felt just right / But then I remembered I was high / Trying to forget the life that’s passed me by with all these / Daydreams of filmstars who one day will be my bride". As we're younger, and even grow older, we have that idea where we think "I want to marry someone like ____" and then we have some famous person we saw on television or in film fill in that blank. Even then, it becomes that fantasy versus reality because when you see someone play a character in a movie it's still not real life, so they aren't really like that (with the exception of Keanu Reeves, I think)
With such a fun and upbeat song, this is sure to give you a kick in the pants. It also might wake you up from your daydreaming of finding that perfect someone, which is something that needs to happen eventually because we can't marry that person we see on screen because they simply are not real. But, at the same time, it is nice to have that image of someone in our head and just kind of live in that dream state for a bit. If it brings you happiness and this song can help you feel happier too, then I say do it.
