Music Review // The Format "Boycott Heaven"

When we first heard fun. it felt like it was easy to think of it as compared to The Format. Now, listening to The Format I'm thinking about how much songs such as "Holy Roller" remind me of fun. It's mostly in that percussion, but there is also something more electronic feeling about fun. than there is about The Format. At times, if you're listening to a fun. song you'll hear those vocals go up the scale and then become autotune but on "Boycott Heaven", The Format does not do that. So you can perhaps feel the difference in little things such as that.
For some reason the song "Shot In The Dark" reminds me of The Lion King. "Depressed" has this way of breaking down into elevator music at one point and the acoustics which begin "Right Where I Belong" (which feels like a fun. reference) just help to make the song pure in sound. The beats make a nice vibe on "Leave It Alone (Till The Morning)", which also mentions the kids in Gaza. I definitely enjoy people using their platforms to speak about such things, especially when it's about those kids wanting to go home but having no home to go to.
Perhaps the thing I like the most about The Format is that every song on here just has these big, thematic elements. This makes every song not only feel like it's this album all on its own, but it also just makes this all feel like such a grand stage show, where I imagine background sets moving and costume changes in between songs. It just has that feeling where it doesn't feel like I'm listening to music so much as I'm experiencing it the way that you would a musical on Broadway. This is an entire show.
