Music Review // Gay Nineties "Internet, Sex & Drugs"
When a song sets a mood both through the lyrics and the sound I really enjoy it, but I also really enjoy when you have a song that can feel like it's from a certain era in time but it has lyrics about a different era. This is true for Gay Nineties, as this song has a very nostalgic feel to it, but with the title "Internet, Sex & Drugs" it has very modern lyrics. On some level, these guitars remind me of Rick Springfield, but there is just this overall feeling of this being the type of song you'd hear in a film such as "Pretty In Pink".
To that end, I believe that this song also really fills a void a lot of people might have when it comes to movie soundtracks. The films of John Hughes, for example, are ones which cannot be readily remade today because even with "Pretty In Pink", Alexa could've given the family a birthday reminder. But the idea of this song feeling like it is set in those times with the modern lyrics comes out in lines like "I was the legacy you left on read".
But the idea behind this song, lyrically, is somewhat interesting to think about. The chorus says "But who needs love when you've got internet, sex and drugs". It's such a different time from the 1980's and 1990's, but you often have to wonder if people just choose to stay home, satisfied with what the internet can provide for them and legal weed. I also don't always think it's a matter of whether or not someone should, but maybe a matter of if they want to or not. Some people should be left alone.
One of my biggest fears with this song was what would happen if I googled both the band name and the title, but I did it to find the lyrics and so far so good. The name Gay Nineties makes a statement in itself, but this song also makes a statement- perhaps around that same time period of the 1990's- where people might have felt more inclined to pursue each other because they couldn't just sit home with what we have now. It's quite the commentary on where we are as a society, with you to debate whether it is improved or not.
