Music Review // Scarlett Macfarlane "Winter’s Whisper"

As soon as this song begins with the big guitars it just does not let up until it ends.   A fast paced story about Wonderland, many aspects of "Alice In Wonderland" are name-dropped in here including that Cheshire cat smile and a Jabberwocky.   To have this song in such a way feels like the blues, like ZZ Ward, but there are also elements of Chaser Eight and Blondie which can be found within this as well.

There was a time- thinking back to Woodstock- when a lot of music seemed to influenced by drugs.  You could watch "Alice In Wonderland" on drugs and have a far different experience than a child would.  While I don't feel like we should push the narrative that more artists should be on drugs (because that can lead to all sorts of other problems) there is a certain whimsy, a sense of imagination that can be found in "Alice In Wonderland" that I feel like this song explores as well, which isn't based on drugs but rather just creativity.

If you look at someone like an artist who would draw, you might flip through their portfolio and find a lot of sketches and drawings they would do of existing characters.  I really feel like we need to stray away from that and start drawing our own characters.  This comes out within this song as well, as Scarlett Macfarlane has this way of creating a song which doesn't feel like it's representing other artists but is rather telling its own story.

One of the lyrics early on that I really like in here simply says: "Sad / Tragic / Mad / Magic".   Just think about how easily changing one letter can change your entire mood or perspective.  But I also feel so much like that perspective is yours to share and what makes us special is that we each have our own.  Instead of drawing your version of an existing popular anime character, draw what speaks to you.  And the same can be said for music, as I feel like we're hearing here.   It's more about imagination than influence.
