Movie Review // Space Babes From Outer Space (2017)
Even though this film has some streaming options, I found the Blu-Ray on eBay (I believe directly from writer/director Brian K. Williams) and decided to view it that way. Right away, I enjoy that this film is even titled "Space Babes From Outer Space" because having the word "space" at the beginning and end makes it feel redundant, but like how Buzz Lightyear says "To infinity and beyond" (you can't really go beyond infinity). This movie also stars Ellie Church, who I know from "Onlyfangs" but will now be watching whenever I see her name in movies.
Speaking of "Onlyfans", this film is also the debut of Jessa Flux and I feel like a lot of my films are based around Jessa Flux these days whether or not it is intentional. Sometimes it is very intentional (such as when I just pre-ordered a new film specifically because she is in it) but other times I just feel like I go into a movie for another reason and find her in it as a pleasant surprise. But there should definitely be more pleasant surprises such as that in films, so everyone put Jessa Flux in your films- even if just for five minutes.
I need to preface this entire review by noting that this film is like "Little Monsters" in the way that it is a grandpa telling this story to a child at bed time. If you can get passed that idea, then nothing else about this film should be too outlandish for you, but at the same time, This story begins with three women who are from space and they end up coming to Earth to try and find fuel to take them back home. There are these two aliens who don't look human following them and trying to destroy them. At one point, the alien tricks the spaceship into telling them where the Babes are because the alien says it took off its panties to go poopy.
The way that these aliens (the bad guys) look reminds me of something we'd see in "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure" although they also remind me of real life Squidbillies to some extent. It's just fun to see someone create a design where it looks different from what we've seen before but is also effective in the way that they move and just do things when they are on Earth. This includes killing humans by basically swallowing them whole which is quite the sight to see.
So when the Space Babes get to Earth they first meet a guy who kind of takes them in and shows them the way. This character- Charlie- is just turned on by these women though and then they realize they can use the energy from erections to help fuel their ship to get back home. While this is sci-fi in its nature, there is also something very much about this film which makes me think it would either come on Cinemax after dark or perhaps be the type of VHS you'd buy as a teen and hide from your parents back before the internet was what it is today.
What I find funny but also really like about "Space Babes From Outer Space" is that it has a reason for the nudity when it is in the film. Sometimes it feels like films are full of nudity just because they want to attract a certain crowd. But the nudity in here seems to at least have a story-driven reason for it. Charlie first takes the Space Babes to a strip club and when these other strippers leave they end up getting eaten by the bad aliens.
I also really happen to enjoy the music in this film and wish there was a soundtrack out there somewhere. Even just the song with the title in it is a whole lot of fun. There is also a scene where Charlie goes home to a family that's like a 1990's family sitcom on drugs and it's just something that you kind of have to experience to believe, though it's also just funny to think about it all as being told by the grandpa still as well.
A lot of this film can feel over the top, but it's comedic as well. There are parts where the Space Babes might take something the wrong way and you end up with a scene where a guy is getting pissed on and then the whole strip club applauds. Being able to go into this one with a sense of humor is important, but I also think if you even so much as watch a trailer for this film you're not going to go into it with expectations of it being some kind of serious drama or whatever. It basically tells you, even in the title, what to expect.
While "Space Babes From Outer Space" feels like it's this b-horror movie with elements of sci-fi and comedy, if you take it in the way that you might watch something like "Plan 9 From Outer Space" you're going to be more than satisfied and if you're anything like me you'll end up watching this film again and again. There is obviously the sexual side to this all, but there is action, there is blood, there is the romantic storyline of Charlie and Carrieola (who is played by Ellie Church) falling in love with each other, an alien developing those feelings.
