Music Review // Stonehocker "I Am Divided"
With steady rock, Stonehocker has created a song about being divided into two and I think in some ways people have always felt this duality. It's funny because in certain situations- such as politics- it's odd to me that we only have two choices, but life can break down into a lot of either/or decisions like Target or Walmart, Coke or Pepsi, good or evil. This has been such a trope in film and art but also in life that we all just kind of come to accept it.
During the chorus of "I Am Divided" the lyrics say: "I'm two men sharing one soul / Only one can have it at the end of it all" In life, we want to strive to be a good person and to be true to ourselves more than anything else. You want to set a moral compass and follow it, but sometimes we stray and sometimes we don't recognize ourselves. So this song feels like it's about those times where we don't recognize ourselves and have to put these two versions of us back into one person because we are only one.
Throughout this music video the main character is running to get a photo to the main character and it's an interesting way to watch this all shape out. It's just a good representation for anyone who has ever felt torn inside and if you've ever lived life then you've likely felt it a lot. As the song says: "I am broken in two" and I feel like the giving of the photo at the end is what helps to put those broken pieces back together.
Stonehocker has a lighter rock sound, which almost feels like Christian rock, but can take on that similar vibe of Eagle Eye Cherry. This song asks questions like "Will one of us leave or are we both here to stay?" and it can feel like that perhaps a bit too much at times. But with the help of this song and finding that moral compass and sticking with it, hopefully you will be able to not feel so divided in the long run.
