Music Review // Kylie Fox "Sequoia"

It is hard not to be immediately taken in by the album "Sequoia".    The opening song, which is also the titular song, has this ambient way about it with vocals which turns into this 1950's type of dreamy rock n roll.  It gets very big and feels like the way that the band fun. opened up their album "Some Nights".   But also, while singing about the title of the album, we are reminded by Kylie Fox just how vital and beautiful trees really are.   I don't feel like that comes out in music or other art enough.

While "Sequoia" can begin with that grandiose number, anthems like "Confetti" will keep you engaged in the sound which can go between soulful and heartfelt to cool jazz.  "Flush" for example has that whistling type of flute and saxophone solo while everything about "Spend the Morning with Me" is just that Nelly Furtado type of cool jazz.

"Brandi Baby", which I've enjoyed as a single prior to this album, brings about that retro Cyndi Lauper type of feel, but then there is that fun flowing jazz on "Hit".  "Ming Mei" can feel lighter but also more hypnotic and it also feels like the type of song you'd go to school to learn how to do the dance for it.  "Armadillo" is a nice song that takes us back to nature and has an acoustic guitar + voice only while "Certain" builds up big with pianos and drumming to close out the album.

While this album is available as both a record and CD, I kind of expected it to have an option for a printed lyric book.   Granted, being based around the tree and nature, the book would have to be printed on either recycled paper or something which wouldn't hurt the trees, but the lyrics are that special to where I'd buy a book with them in it.  The voice of Kylie Fox can also go up in this operatic type way and that's just another one of the many reasons why you should be in love with this album like I am.
