Music Review // Dave Whitty "Where I Belong"

As "Where I Belong" begins with this acoustic singer/song writer type of sound it quickly switches into more of an Americana / country sound as it kicks in.   There are strings in here and a full band feeling as the sound shifts after the first few moments of the song.   An energy also exists within this song, which is important to the message because it's about getting up and going.

This song isn't about anything that I've dealt with personally, but it's about being away from your family for work.   Whether you're a truck driver or military, this might apply to you, though this song does sing about being on a boat so I think of it more like someone who is on the show "Deadliest Catch" but maybe not as dangerous.

We also know that this song takes place in or at least near Canada, with the lines "I was sailing on through Montreal / And I got the call / I'm leaving in the Fall"   While this could be something very dangerous it could also just be someone who works for a cruise line, but the way that the song also sings about drinking rum and wine I very much imagine a pirate lifestyle.  Still, the hook says "Steer this ship and get us home".

In some ways this song can be relatable on every level.  Even if you're just going to work at an office and steering the ship back home is driving your Ford Focus through rush hour traffic, the sentiment of missing someone and wanting to be back where they are remains.   This happens every day and I just don't think there are enough songs about it, so definitely add this one by Dave Whitty to your playlist.
