Music Review // Madam Sad "Exs"
The song "Exs" comes in slowly with this acoustic guitar sound. It feels like we're in the Old West, the way that someone would just be so casual and slow in their delivery. As the melodies come in fuller, you can hear some sounds which resemble both Slothrust and the rock sound of the 1990's / grunge era. This is a very interesting song though because the pacing of it is slow and steady, it never really changes and there isn't really a chorus. Rather than being verse/chorus/verse, "Exs" has more of a Point A-Point B type of way about it.
Different lyrics can come out and be repeated, as the first ones to do this say "I love to lose every new pair of shoes" and then "shoes" is repeated. This pattern continues throughout the song, but not with the same words. The lyrics are more poetry than singing but it comes out in a way which just bleeds art. In many ways I feel like this can both shine a light on the past and also show what is in store for the modern song and modern use of lyrics.
By the end you'll hear the lines "I feel hatred / I feel loneliness / I want to see you again / Even if it's just as friends". This really captures the idea of being at the end of a relationship with someone, and that is what the song is about as it is titled "Exs". I also think it's worth taking into consideration that just because you don't work in a romantic way doesn't mean you don't still share things in common and so you can work as friends, as the lyrics say.
Musically this is just one of those songs that warms my nostalgic heart but also gives me hope for the future of music. The lyrics telling a story can be both beneficial in the sense that the song itself can be enough to listen to and take away some ideas from, but at the same time it does feel like a piece of a bigger picture which could be the placement of this song on an album, which could expand on this idea like chapters in a book.
