Music Review // Henry Taylor "Shoebox of Money"

 

"Shoebox of Money" has a highway rock n roll sound to it which can be influenced by artists such as Neil Young, Wallflowers, Fastball and Tom Petty.   This is a rock song with an Americana feel and it has a harmonica in the beginning.   Before the end of the song there is also a nice guitar solo.

Though this feels like a very specific story of events it can still be related with on a larger scale.  The story tells of a woman who is breaking away from a man who she needed to get away from.   As the lyrics say: "And he was a thief / Someone she lived in fear of", but they also go on to tell how he went to jail.   She knew about this shoebox of money he kept in a barn, so she went, got that and took off in a car for a new life.

Perhaps the reason why you need to break away is different but it's the same idea of hitting that open road, of starting over, and that's what this song captures.  The chorus of "She's on the road to her tomorrow / She won't need to beg or borrow" is something you can relate with if you've ever moved away from your problems and while "With a shoebox of money / for her survival" is more specific odds are something is there to help you along.

I enjoy that this song tells a story and I also enjoy that you can slightly alter this version of the story to fit your narrative if you've ever felt like you were in a position where you needed to leave.  Whether you've left, are thinking of leaving or just don't realize it yet, this is a good song about driving that will drive you.
