Music Review // Miss the Heart "Don't U Dare"

"Don't U Dare" begins with this smooth type of guitar riff that comes in with an almost blues-like bass line.   This song reminds me a bit of Brooke Stilla while also having that similar quality to one of the older songs by No Doubt, like one where there might be a video that looks like Casablance.   There is just this overall quality to the music that I can't quite put my finger on, where it feels cheeky but also deliberate.

Right away these lyrics begin with "And it looks like we might have a problem now" which goes into the deep dive of "Oh, I'm the psycho that you see" and just the overall feeling of someone not wanting to engage.   It's best described in the chorus with the lines "When we don't needa take it there / But you wanna pull me way down with ya".  Sometimes when you get into fights with people and they're down bad, they want to take you down too but this is about resisting that.

During the second verse you'll hear lines like "Maybe speak, not shout" which I really like and "Guess you're gonna drown".  This song isn't just about having someone who wants to drag you down with them and ignoring them, but it's about finding that way to stop them so they go down without you-- you never even get on that sinking ship.  Though the lyrics do also say "If it was up to me / We'd talk it out right now" but sometimes other people can just be so stubborn.

There will come a time in almost everyone's life when they feel like they are in the middle of drama.  The problem with being in drama is that you can go back and forth, sinking further into it, until there is nothing left of either one of you.  This song by Miss the Heart is about not even getting to the point where you begin to start sinking, to just shut that down right away, and basically doing so by standing up for yourself.  Next time someone wants to pull you into their mess I want you to remember "Don't U Dare".
