Music Review // Allegories "Pure Comedy"
In life, they tell you that everything is either a comedy or a tragedy- it's just a matter of timing. To hear Allegories singing about how it is "Pure Comedy" just makes me think that we are looking on that more positive side of life and have not yet got to that point where the time has come for it to be sad. I also like the idea of comedy being the focus of this song because sometimes when something is happening in your life you just have to laugh it off, or laugh to avoid the pain.
Allegories makes some fairly distinct rock music. Using keys with the guitars puts this into a pop genre that can be heard on the radio, along the lines of bands such as Neon Trees, but the sound of Allegories isn't quite that pop. At times this reminds me of Silversun Pickups and it just takes on that unassuming rock sound. There are these bits where something echoes or sounds like it's glitching and that's just an added layer which makes this sound so special.
Some of the lyrics which repeat during this song include the line: "I always knew you'd turn out this way". I like that as a means of comedy because it's just that idea of laughing that what you thought would happen did happen. It's not the way you laugh at a joke, but more like a confirmation. During the chorus there is a lyric which says "When I was everything I ever hoped to be" and I suppose it is funny to be in that position. By the end there is a part where they just say "Theoretical / Theatrical" and I think that nod to the theater further validates my idea of the two masks and timing.
There is a music video for this song which looks like it was made on VHS and I do enjoy that. While the elements of pop are here, this song might be too long for the radio or just too unconventional, but that's what makes it so great. It truly takes you on this adventure and the song can feel like an album in and of itself. Subsequent listens to "Pure Comedy" can bring out parts you may not have heard the first or second time around and that is one of the greatest gifts music can give.
