Music Review // Drop Dead Poppies "Lies"

When this song first begins there are these guitar chords which make me think this could be a ska song coming.  It's not quite there, but I feel like something along the same lines as Save Ferris isn't too far off.  But as "Lies" goes on, there are these bluesy chords which just make you feel like you're rocking.  This is definitely the type of song you can sway back and forth to, in a relaxing but also interactive way.

At times this song can also remind me of an artist such as Blondie, who has such a sound that feels like it can vary from song to song but you'll hear it in here too if you really listen.  But I do enjoy that this song sounds like or adjacent to other artists and genres without actually sounding like them.  It's ska, but not.  It's blue, but not.  It's something that we will eventually come to know as being the sound of Drop Dead Poppies in time.

What do we need to know lyrically about a song called "Lies"?  Well, even though it might feel like everyone lies there are also levels to the lying.  Saying you like someone's hat when maybe you don't isn't as big of a deal as hiding an entire other family from them.  This sort of idea comes out in the chorus with the lyrics: "I pour my heart out to you / You can tell me lies".  It just feels like you're exposing yourself to someone else, being open and vunerable with them, and they are not able to do the same.

Musically at times I hear this song and can also think of the band Goldfinger.  There is more than one occasion where a guitar comes in and blisters through a solo that will just make you pay close attention to the guitars and I like that as well.   But as the song says "You remind me all the time that I gotta let you go" and as such you should use this as a way to know you're worth and keep those who are not on your level out of your life.
