An Interview With // Kasper Meltedhair
1) Do you feel like the like there are parallels between the way in which you would create music and film, in the way that they are both put into the world, promoted, received, etc.?
The creation of both is pretty similar. I make art with instinct, with as little thinking as possible, using feeling instead. My writing is stream of concious, and I make music to surprise myself, blindly picking sounds then seeing how I can turn them into something I like. The same with my writing, if I write a scene, I dont question it, its meant to be so I make it work.
2) Would you ever entertain the idea of creating a film which also has a soundtrack by you, so you could go around and show the film across the country while also performing the soundtrack to it live?
Yeah that would be fun :) It would be a new improvised soundtrack each time. I can't recreate anything, I have to make something new..it's gotta be a surprise to myself.
3) Reading the description for "Garchaster's Cornblade", I feel like it is a bit absurd. But I also feel like people hearing The Beatles for the first time, decades ago, would have felt the same way about their sound. Do you feel like the future of film is absurdity?
3) Reading the description for "Garchaster's Cornblade", I feel like it is a bit absurd. But I also feel like people hearing The Beatles for the first time, decades ago, would have felt the same way about their sound. Do you feel like the future of film is absurdity?
Yeah, completely. Everyone ignores the fact that we had it figured out as kids...absurdly playing pretend, using our imaginations everyday as default play. Humanity needs that, not remakes. Absurdity goes beyond all communication barriers dissolving limits of logic and physics into laughter.
4) While "Garchaster's Cornblade" is a followup to "Busted Babies", do you think of it at all as being like a sequel? Do people need to see one to appreciate the other?
No. But they are both about immortality and peanut butter.
5) How did you come up with the idea of someone wanting to get inside of a VHS tape? (and why did I never think of that)
I just wrote it out.
6) Do you prefer to be behind the camera or in front of it?
Definitely behind.
7) What is it like working with Donald Farmer both as him directing you and you directing him?
He's very easygoing and spontaneous. I love when he comes up with ideas on the spot while he's directing, I learned that from him. He's pretty wild. He's very easy to direct..he adds great character without being given much direction. He asked me if he could speed recite shakespere in Garchaster so I gladly said yes! He improved his purple horse lady dream monologue.
8) If you could choose one Donald Farmer film that you were not a part of that you would have liked to have been an actor in, which one would you choose?
Lil Bo Creep because it's my favorite of his.
9) In music, as in film, you have physical releases. How important do you feel things such as the compact disc, record, cassette and blu-ray, DVD and VHS are as a creator?
They're important to me because they help me pay for food sometimes haha. It feels grounding to own your favorites in tangible form.
10) Final thoughts, shout outs, etc... ??
Shout outs to Andy Heck Boyd, Caroline Kopko, Chocolate Monk, Brewce Longo, Bloodsick Productions, and James Ferraro for inspiration.
