Music Review // Eri Yamamoto "Fly With The Wings" (Mahakala Music)
Among many of the things which this album can be, Eri Yamamoto has created an album of jazz music which is just flat out fun. "Fly With The Wings" opens with the song "What Do They Mean" which has this piano-based jazz and sings about opposites. Horns are blaring and the lyrics ask questions like "Up or down / Down or up". This almost feels like something out of Sesame Street, but it can ask the question of "What do they mean?" which is the response of them meaning nothing to me.
While the titular track is a bit wild in nature we slow things down with a solo bass line for "Peach". Pianos and sax come out near the end and then the mood shifts to a big upbeat feeling on "Cheer Me Up". The way that the song is called "Cheer Me Up" and the music feels like it's trying to do exactly that is remarkable. "Where To Go" is big on the singing, it has some pianos and then the horns come in. Key lines include "I'm crying / You're crying" as it repeats in different places of the song.
By the end we get to "Let's Do It" which is just so much fun. It has this dancing / bouncing way about it and I'm reminded of a polka at times. This is the type of energy which would be really fun to experience live. It has that idea of always leave them wanting more and going out with a bang as this ends with a tight note. From start to finish this is just one of the most pleasurable albums you can listen to and listen to it you should.
