Music Review // Havelin "Dancing At My Funeral"

"Dancing At My Funeral" is a song that immediately upon hearing it I will say that I not only want it played at my funeral but I would like it used as a guide for such an event.   When most people think of funerals they think of them as sad occasions, full of crying and people expressing grief.  But I've always felt like a funeral should be that representation of life, where people can come together to tell stories and remember someone in a positive way- so they can laugh and be okay with it all.

Havelin has the line "Moving on is beautiful" and it's funny how we all die but then feel like it's this super serious and sad occasion.   We know it's coming, for all of us, so we might as well appreciate the time we have while we have it.  And when it's over, don't be sad it's over but rather be happy that you knew me.  As this song says: "I had a real good run and when I'm done I'd rather that you celebrate"

With acoustic stomps and melodies, this song breaks down into horns in the chorus as well.  Through a string of lyrics the last line is: "I'll see you bastards later" and then the song goes into a saxophone solo.   This is just a whole lot of fun as a song- it creates a mood and that mood is of a party.  "Dancing At My Funeral" brings the level of fun that you would imagine from a song which has the word "dancing" in the title.

Look, I get that death is sad for those who are left behind.  I am in no way saying that we should be happy when someone dies.  Grief is a normal and natural thing and we all process such things differently.  But as this song also says: "And you can cry if you want to but know that I'm going to haunt you if you don't try and have a good night"   So while being sad is okay, it's also important to look back fondly with a smile on your face.
