Music Review // Dumb Crush "Witches In The Dark"
There might not be a more perfect time to release the song "Witches In The Dark" than on Halloween and I think that Dumb Crush knew that. Not only is this song about witches but it's about being in the dark, which generally tends to be scary and a large premise for horror films. This song has a lot of energy, sort of electronic and sort of pop but at its heart it is still a rock song. While this feels like something Frank Iero might be a part of, there are also those elements of The Killers and Neon Trees.
One of the things I truly enjoy about this song is that it has a presence, it just seems to create its own vibe. It feels like the type of song you might hear during a specific scene in a film, maybe for thirty seconds but not for more than a minute, and then you go off and track down the entire song and start listening to everything by Dumb Crush. This also feels very much like something which could happen within a film by Jane Schoenbrun, which I hope isn't too obscure of a reference.
Throughout this song you will hear the lyrics which just tell the tale of witches being out there in the dark. Lines like "In the dark / I feel the blood is dripping down my chin / The moment after impact running through my brain again" just really set the mood. Musically this is a great song but lyrically it has a definite purpose and it does that perfectly as well, just creating this space which doesn't just thrive on sound but can take your imagination to a visual place as well.
This music video has a great Blair Witch Project vibe about it and the whole thing just feels like so much more than just a song. But, also, in keeping with that idea of Halloween, "Witches In The Dark" is just a great song to add to a playlist revolving around this holiday. In a mainstream way it just doesn't feel like there are a lot of songs like this out there, but Dumb Crush haven given us one which is just so perfect for this day.
