Music Review // Billie Zizi "Levitate"

As "Levitate" begins, you can hear Billie Zizi channeling such artists as Lana Del Rey and Sheryl Crow, as the sound feels a bit atmospheric but also with that little bit of country.   These songs feel like dreamy storytelling and by the time you reach the end of the album, you'll realize that Billie Zizi has taken on a voice all her own and this will become a sound you will begin relating with her and comparing others with in the future.

Through sweet guitar riffs we have lyrics such as:  "I let it take me / Levitate away / And I feel free" on the first song, which is also the titular track.   This is important as the first song and also as the theme of the album.  Sometimes- especially when it comes to our feelings- we try to supress things, we try to bottle them up instead of just living through them.  The way this song says "I let it take me" just makes me think about riding through the wave rather than trying to fight it, both in various aspects of your life but also within just listening to this album.

"Midnight Sun" can bring you in with the smooth groove while "A Picture of a Picture" has this wind chime sound with a nice drive, though it also can grow into a big rock sound which has eerie undertones.   Those Tracy Chapman type of blues guitar riffs start up "May You Dance", which has the line: "May your joy be unmuted".   If nothing else, you should away a sense of pleasure from "Levitate", as it seems to be about just getting lost in your feelings and that makes feeling good feel even better.

By the time we reach "Radiant Black Sun" you'll hear those gritty guitar chords over melody ala Audio Jane.   "Neon Dream" ends the album as a big, acoustic ballad feeling of a song and with the lines: "I saw you in a neon dream / Dancing in a robin's egg blue / I love you hopelessly / As hopeless lovers do".   While this album definitely has that theme of being about love songs, it's not like other albums about love songs as "Levitate" seems to want to take you from that feeling of happiness to euphoria.   If you listen and really open yourself up to the sound, you can do just that.
