Music Review // Odd Marshall "Nobody Wins"
Odd Marshall explores the genres of classic rock which hit on the lighter side with this song "Nobody Wins". I'm reminded of bands like The Eagles, and specifically Don Henley, as it just has that sound which conveys a lot of energy and can be somewhat on the fun side of things as well. With the start and stop acoustic guitar chord sound, I also hear some Tom Petty in here, but within the vocal styles Odd Marshall really is creating his own path.
When "Nobody Wins" starts the lyrics are about gambling and it's always interesting to me how people will gamble money. I get it that you can walk into a casino with $100 and turn it into $100,000 if you're lucky, but if you're not lucky then you could end up owing that much. Part of the idea of this song seems to be themed around that idea- with lines like "Not everybody's drinking for free" It just feels like a reminder that even if you think you're winning at gambling, eventually you're going to lose.
One of the biggest things people need to learn in life is that not every situation is as cut and dry as "Well, you lose so therefore I win". As this song says: "Another lost cause where nobody wins" and it needs to be that reminder that sometimes, especially when relationships end, it can feel like no one is winning but it's what must be done. People tend to feel so much like life is a competition that they seem to forget sometimes there are no winners in certain aspects of it.
Along with this general theme, Odd Marshall brings out lines like: "I can't fall asleep with all my sins / When will my good old days begin" They always say you look back and miss the good old days, that you don't know when you're a part of them until after, but sometimes it doesn't feel like you're going to look back at times fondly and I get that. Especially if you're not winning and that's what this song is a reminder of for those who willing to listen.
