Music Review // Brock Geiger "Lemonade"
Right away I really enjoy this song because Brock Geiger seems to be taking music to places which it previously has not been. There is a slow, almost seductive way about this pop rock. Acoustic percussion can be heard within it and it just explores uncharted territory. In some grand way, I feel like many of the elements of what was on the college radio charts in the early 2000's has been combined into this sound: that idea of taking someone like Spoon and combining it with Com Truise.
When this chorus first comes through it says "I would wrap my lips around your lemonade / But it's a sour taste". This song makes me think about the old saying about how when life gives you lemons, you make lemonade. In some ways, I feel like the point of this song is that even if you've been handed lemons (a bad deal) and are trying to turn them into lemonade (something positive) it's still sour and so it's not the best. It's like burning pancakes but just putting extra syrup on them. Yes, you get the sweet syrup but underneath the pancakes are still burnt.
Along with that idea and as it feels in this music video, I feel like in many ways this song is also about temptation. At the start someone who I assume is Brock Geiger is seen making lemonade, but later on someone else (someone with a beard) is shown making lemonade and that person I believe to be Brock Geiger seems unsure about drinking it. The way that the chorus also changes to "I would wrap my lips around your lemonade / I'm bored with being safe" makes me also feel like drinking the lemonade is giving into temptation.
By the end of this song you will have heard a saxophone and it just has that musical range where you can take bits and pieces out of it for various musical influences, but it just feels like the way everything comes together is a blend of so many styles that Brock Geiger has created a new genre. Pair that up with that thought-provoking lyrics and we have a song which many might be afraid of experiencing but everyone should be tuning in.
