Music Review // Six Going On Seven "Human Tears" (Spartan Records)

Back before the kids were saying "six seven" as some kind of meme, there was a band called Six Going On Seven.   While I feel like I should remember them for being on Some Records (which gave us artists at the time such as The Exit, who seemed to always be touring with The Stryder) I really remember them for their album "American't (Or Won't)" because it was on Doghouse Records, which I had this CD sampler for that brought me into new artists (at the time) such as The Honorary Title, Limbeck, River City High and Say Anything.

Oddly enough, that was their last release and it has been twenty five years between that album and "Human Tears", which is a long time and when you think about all that has happened it can feel like it's been even longer.   I remember Six Going On Seven being part of this musical revolution for me, which featured artists such as Time Spent Driving, Eleventeen and Penfold.  It was that scene of not quite indie rock or punk and not quite emo, but just this pure sound coming through your speakers.

Six Going On Seven returns with big keys and a bit of a Phil Collins sound on the titular track. "Olusia" is a piano ballad that nicely breaks up the pace, but overall this just has that feeling of being like Liars Academy but even less heavy than that in ways.  People often wonder what are some of those peak late 1990's / early 2000's sort of emo adjacent bands you might not hear a lot about any more and I definitely feeling Six Going On Seven was in that conversation, but hopefully with the release of "Human Tears" they'll be brought back into the present conversations.
