Music Review // 2ŁØT "Favorite Star"
With slower electronic beats and piano keys, 2ŁØT have created a sound on this new single, "Favorite Star", which can feel as calm and cool as gradually going into a swimming pool on a hot summer day. This isn't the fast paced type of dance song you might have heard from 2ŁØT before, but it is a nice way to start preparing for the release of their sophomore album, due out in the summer. There just feels like this place between electronic music, hip hop and just an overall chill vibe have come together to form this sound.
Lyrically this song just feels like one you'll need to think about. It can feel like it has that slower, steady pace because it wants you to dive into deep thought with these lyrics. The chorus makes it feel as if the meaning of "Favorite Star" is to be taken directly in the sense of the star which we see in the sky at night. This just feels like it comes with that reminder that when we look at the sky and see those stars, they've actually burned out millions of years ago and are, as the song says, ancient light.
At the same time the meaning behind this star can be thought of as a person, a celebrity even. This comes out the best in the lines: "You're never who / You once were / So when you see him / You might see stars". Now the fun part in this is thinking about how this relates to a person you might admire who is a star- such as a musician. Did their star burnout before you even found out who they were and now you're staring at what used to be?
But I choose to think of this more in a positive way. I think whether you want this song to be about the stars in the sky or a person, this song just has to represent change. We're all changing, hopefully more often than we realize. To say you're not the same person you were ten years ago just feels natural, it just feels like growth. I am glad that is being recognized in this song and I hope more people can recognize this not only in themselves but in others as well.
