Music Review // Goldfinger "Nine Lives"

Did Goldfinger name this album "Nine Lives" because it's their ninth album? Yes, yes they did. To know that I was listening to Goldfinger back in the late 1990's and am still able to listen to new music by them all these years later brings me a sort of comfort that I don't think people hearing Goldfinger for the first time with this album can truly appreciate. There are quite a few bands from the 1990's that aren't still releasing new music so to feel like this is that grown up punk sound really relates with me, even though it doesn't take away from any of the punk aspects.
Right into the second song, "FREAKING OUT A BIT", which features Mark Hoppus (and I also remember seeing Blink 182 at The Webster Theater back in the day) that punk sound that Goldfinger made their own kicks right in. The first song, "CHASING AMY", feels a bit closer to pop punk but is still a good song, especially if you know the film.
"LOSER" has this almost ska feel to it, which reminds me of older Goldfinger as well, and at one point the lyrics ask "Can I use your shower?", which might be a nod to the debut, self-titled Goldfinger album. (IYKYK, as the kids say) There is also a line in this song about not wanting to be back in 1999, which is good because it shows you that you should keep moving forward and not be stuck in the past, but at the same time, I do think 1999 was such a great year and then turn of the century has been, well, not as great.
If you've been a fan of Goldfinger since you first heard their self-titled album (I bought it at Nobody Beats The Wiz for $8.98, which was a good deal for CDs back then!) or this is your first time, you'll be able to sing along with these energetic punk songs that will help you escape from what else is going on in the world right now. You might not know that NOFX makes an appearance on this album, on the song "THE PUNISHER" but was also name-dropped on the self-titled album by Goldfinger, but you also might be able to pull out your own little bits of trivia. Either way, this album is a good time.
