Music Review // The Blank Tapes "Lost Weekend"

If you have never heard The Blank Tapes before, then "Lost Weekend" is going to hit you like a ton of bricks.   From the very first song, which is called "Dump", you might think that this is going to be an alt-country album.  I also feel like that idea is somewhat based on the nature of that first song.  But as the album goes on, you'll hear sounds ranging from Americana to rock n roll.  Artists such as Soul Asylum and Tom Petty can be heard coming through.

One thing which sets this album by The Blank Tapes apart from other albums which might be along the same genre is that there is a strong quality of musicianship within these songs.  At times, the song can kind of just let the music guide it, to where this can feel like it's becoming more instrumental than having lyrics.  But the songs are also the type of songs which will get stuck in your head, and would be fun to sing along with in a live setting.

"Lost Weekend" is a heavy album in the sense that it isn't ten songs and thirty minutes long- it's much longer.  With this slow and winding way, with some twang, I think this is important as well.  This isnt the type of album you're going to listen to once and fully get, but it's going to take a lot of your time to truly appreciate this- like reading a long book.  But if you take the time, in this world of ours which seems to be about everything going fast, you might also learn some things about yourself in the process.
