Music Review // Andrea An "Save You"
When "Save You" first begins there is this feeling of complex pop to it. This is interesting because for as much music as I've listened to, hearing that verse coming in like that right away, I didn't know what would happen next. I was expecting something along the lines of pop or rock, but the way that Andrea An kicks in this song is closer to metal and I was not prepared for that. Though it was certainly welcome because it leaves the overall feeling and message to be more dramatic.
People are always going to take what they feel personally from a song- they're going to relate with it through their past experiences. "Save You" has this theme of as the title says, "I couldn't save you". It's that idea that for all you tried, you did everything you could and you just couldn't save that other person. This could hit home for someone who knew a family member, for example, who is struggling with addiction. There are many sort of deep and tragic ways in which you can find comfort in relating with these lyrics.
For me, for who I am, I hear this song and just think how it can feel atmospheric. It's just big, like it should be a part of some grand show or film. Of course, as I'm thinking about that there is one clear moment which comes to mind that I relate with this song and it's the death of Gwen Stacy. Whether on the pages of a comic book or the big screen, this just feels like the lines: "I break and bleed without a word / I hold the truth beneath the hurt" to me.
One artist I really feel like I can compare Andrea An with is Poppy. But the difference between Andrea An and Poppy is that there are times when Poppy gets really heavy and starts screaming. So if you listen to Poppy and can just imagine it as being melodic metal without the hardcore breakdowns and screaming, well, then you have the sound of Andrea An. The sound is nowhere near as tragic as the lyrics, but we all need to work through our pain somehow. This song might just help you.
