Music Review // Elise Trouw "The Diary of Elon Lust"

After listening to "The Diary of Elon Lust" through in full, you will begin to realize that this is a concept album and quite frankly it is one of the best concept albums I have ever heard, as people could likely write books about this.   When you get to the third song on here, "She Was Naked", you will hear Elise Trouw singing and think about how this might be a woman singing about a woman.  There is certainly nothing wrong with that and you could sing along to this song as a gay anthem, but as you pass that point of the album and dive into the other songs you will begin to see that though these songs are sung by Elise Trouw they are from the viewpoint of a man.

As someone who is a huge fan of Sabrina Carpenter (my most listened to artist on Spotify in 2025) I have seen instances where parents mistakenly take their children to Sabrina Carpenter shows.  Though the songs on "The Diary of Elon Lust" are along the same sort of pop lines as Sabrina Carpenter and Chappell Roan, the lyrical content involved is cranked up to 11 and probably should not be experienced by anyone if not of a certain age or without adult guidance.  Look, I'm not here to tell you how to raise your kids, I'm just saying if you think "Juno" by Sabrina Carpenter is dirty, you're going to be fucking replused by the song "BJE" on here.

But at the same time, as much as these songs can remind me of other artists, this is still a story about women as told from the perspective of a creepy man, a real Elon Musk type.  In that way, these songs are made to upset you lyrically.  These are not lyrics you should sit with comfortably, or if you do you might need some self reflection, therapy or perhaps jail.  There is a simple, twenty second song that is called "18" and simply says "She's finally 18" and then plays the sound of a party horn at the end.  If this is the type of thing where you're also celebrating someone turning 18, perhaps you do need to be put on some sort of list where you have to introduce yourself to your neighbors.

Not to get too deep into any of these topics as each song could be its own chapter in a book, but the lyrics of the song "(I Like My Women) Shaved" make me think about why it is socially acceptable for men to have body hair but women not so much (and I feel like I've typed that before recently, which is just weird) while "A Little Blood" is about men wanting sex (or not wanting it) from women when they are on their period.  See how this lyrical content might not be for your kids?  "You're More Fun When You're Drunk" just opens up more questions about not only alcoholism but also the possibility of date rape (cover your drinks, ladies) and the album ends with "Because You Are Hot", which is your reminder that you don't have a winning personality but are fuckable.

One of the songs that really makes you think is "If I Was a Girl" because it's from that male perspective that women have it so easy because they can just sell feet pics online and become millionaires for doing nothing, just sort of glancing over how most women are almost always living in fear of being either raped, murdered or both.  What you have to understand about this album is that musically, Elise Trouw can channel artists such as Alessia Cara and Charlie XCX, which just makes it a whole lot of fun and easy on the ears.  But lyrically, this is going to get confusing but try and stay with me: this album is being told through the perspective of a man, a gross man, and it's basically pointing out how gross a lot of men can be but it is somehow taking a woman to do this.

While I wish there were more artists out there who were men that could say "Hey, other men, leave women alone" or "Hey guys, when you do this, it creeps out women so maybe stop that", but that just isn't the world we live in right now.  So, yes, I appreciate how this is all a giant red flag of "don't be like this men" within the lyrics of "The Diary of Elon Lust", but I also especially appreciate and have to recognize that this must also be told through that lense of a man but still by a woman, probably because men are not willing to call out their own bullshit.  So listen to this one for sure and enjoy the musical creativity involved, but then also think about- really think about- these lyrics and you'll understand why this is not just one of the best albums of the year, but really it will go down as an all-timer.
