Music Review // Fur Blossom "Goldsmith"

Fur Blossom feels like a name that is a singular combination of the Psychedelic Furs and the Gin Blossoms.  This actually works for the sound, if only because there are some psychedelic qualities to this song, "Goldsmith".   When you think of the music of The Beatles but in a more far out way, plus just the sort of bands who maybe came in between that era of rock n roll and Woodstock- maybe even a little bit of The Velvet Underground- and you'll have that idea of how this rock n roll sounds,.

Lyrically this song will take you on a journey.  The lines "But he said, she said / I know what it's like to be dead / But the rain don't make no sense / And it's all stuck in my head" are those types of lyrics where you maybe question what is being said, but yet still it just somehow works.  The rain doesn't really make sense, if you truly think about it, but I'm not sure anyone knows what it's like to be dead because typically people who are dead don't come back.  But, yes, this also doesn't need to be taken so literally.

During this music video you can see the band playing the song but there are also other moments.  At one point the singer is on the floor with a notebook opened up, where you can see words written inside.  At a different time there is a game of pool being played but instead of pool balls there are crumbled up pieces of paper.  This leads me to believe that those pieces of paper might be rejected lyrics, but just the idea of taking those thoughts and turning them into a game seems like something you can have a good think about.

I truly feel like there hasn't been this type of rock n roll in the mainstream for quite some time, but since we no longer need to rely on the radio and MTV for experiencing music we can find these sounds all on our own.  By no means do I feel like you should go out and take drugs while listening to this or any music, but there just was a time when a lot of music felt heavily influenced by drugs and we lost that.  Fur Blossom keeping that sound alive- and not needing drugs to feel it- should be enough to rock with this song.
