Music Review // Strange Plants "Dance So Real"
When "Dance So Real" begins there are these crunchy guitars but a lighter poppy sound to it as well. I'm reminded of some classic rock vibes, but I'm also thinking about artists such as Blind Melon and Flaming Lips. While this song is near six minutes long, it takes you on this epic journey with different sections and that just makes it feel even more like classic rock. This isn't the type of thing artists do these days because they're afraid it might affect their radio play, but this song also doesn't feel like it's as long as it is and that's a big deal.
There is a very heavy musical side to this song, where the vocals of Strange Plants come in at times but less than the music guides you on this experience. The sound itself can feel rather trippy and if you're watching the music video along with the song, you'll also feel that way as you see images such as animated flowers on fire. This is certainly the type of vision I'd love to see playing on a giant screen behind the band as they perform the song live, which is also something I think is missing from rock n roll today.
Around the halfway point of the song we go into this electronic break down, which really can be felt because it's different from the rock which came before it. We build back up in this experimental Radiohead meets Led Zeppelin way. Before the five minute mark- as we near the end- the percussion pace picks up greatly and the guitars just seem to be going all out. This is the true definition of a rock n roll masterpiece.
One of the lyrics I can really feel in here- which they build up to really well- says: "Love the way you dance so real / In the morning sun I feel". I think I like this line so much because on one hand you can think about waking up next to someone in your bed, the light shining through the window and them moving around. But at the same time, as the name Strange Plants and the music video suggests, you can just think about this as the flowers and grass blowing around in the wind. A lot of this song can be open to how the listener wants to take it and that is even more of a reason to listen.
