Music Review // Uncle G "In Pursuit"
From start to finish, "In Pursuit" is an energetic run of acoustic-based rock that has elements of both blues and jazz. At times I feel like Uncle G is doing what Mumford & Sons does- combining more traditional genres with less traditional sounds- but at the same time that's more about the execution than the elements involved. This song definitely has that radio feel where it could be on rock or pop radio, much like the song "Wake Me Up" by Avicii.
One of the things I believe in life is that we need to continue to move forward. Yes, we must study history or be doomed to repeat it, but I also feel as if we shouldn't dwell on the past for too long because then we take away from both the present and the future. This comes out in the lyrics: "You can't stop me now / Get in line or get out of my way". I also enjoy that these lines show that determination.
This song is about having that goal, seeing that goal and realizing that goal. If we let nothing get in our way and stop us, we can do that as well. There is an important line in here that says: "I got wrinkles for each lesson I learned" because you're also going to learn along the way. You can't just keep trying the same thing and expect different results. So this song can also be seen as a teaching tool in that way.
Perhaps what I like most about this song is that in the chorus Uncle G says: "I've got nothing left to lose and I am always in pursuit". This song doesn't really specify what is being pursued. Is it a job? Is it a degree? Is it love? Is it happiness? The way that it could be any of these things really makes this song special because no matter what you're chasing after, continue to chase after it. I believe we shut down in ways when we're not "In Pursuit" so this song is a good reminder to keep going.
