Music Review // Ava Della Pietra "Moon Over Capri"
When I think of Ava Della Pietra, I think about songs which are generally pop rock anthems. I think of songs which are upbeat, can get you out of your seat and moving, and most of all just pump me full of energy. On the latest single, "Moon Over Capri", Ava Della Pietra fills me with a solemn feeling. This is one of reflection, deep thought and for some who have experienced this in full- it can be about grief. I would say this is the type of song you'd hear at a funeral, but it feels slightly too upbeat for that, so at least there is that little spark of hope within it.
Accompanied only by the piano, Ava Della Pietra sings one of the most serious songs you will ever hear about one of the topics people try to avoid the most: mental health. Right away this song says "I heard that you've been going through it" and so you can tell this song is about the struggle and given the current state of the world today, who isn't going through something? As the chorus says "You say life's too short / But what about yours / There's still more to see" you have to think about the idea of seizing the day.
As the song goes on it becomes quite beautiful with the ahhhhs and overall just feels like something you need to put your full attention on because it is that important. By the end we have the lines "Filled up your answering machine / Just to hear you say you're sorry that you're missing me / And you'll call me back / But you can't do that" and I'm reminded of the movie "Cuckoo". I'm reminded of that idea of loss and regret, holding onto what's left that you can of someone who is gone that you wish was still here.
What I like most about "Moon Over Capri" is that it can mean different things to different people based on your experiences. To me, this sounds like a song where you did everything you could to help someone who ultimately ended up taking their own life. But you can also just hear this as a song that is about a loved one you lost. On top of all of that though, this song is just about living and how life is short so we have to get out there, make the most of it while we can, and not take a second of it for granted.
