Music Review // MEGGO "sylvia's place ;; tricks"
When this song begins it is a melodic ballad of vocals with a piano. This sound continues for about half of the song and then it kicks in to reveal percussion and other instruments which make it full out dreamy. There are also layers to the vocals at this point and the way this takes you from one, singular sound to that of many feels like when one person is speaking to you versus an entire crowd of people speaking.
The way that this song has "Sylvia's Place" in the title makes me think it is about an actual place. Isn't it funny how we go through life, spending time at our friends' houses, in their parents' basements, etc and then one day we just don't go there any more? It makes me think of all the places I've been and won't ever be again, some of those places because the people I knew no longer live there.
With lyrics like "Never afraid of a party" you can think of this as being about a physical location but there is also a part of it which makes me think that as much as this might be about "Sylvia's Place", it also might just be about "Sylvia". Both the ideas of "Miss you like you were part of my body" and "But you've been a friend" could apply to both a place where you feel safe or a person you feel safe being with.
Whether you become nostalgic for old places in your life or you want to relate this song with a person, the complexity within the song is that it can be about both. As much as I think about being in someone's house, you also have to think about that person. There is no "Sylvia's Place" without "Sylvia". Hopefully listening to this song will make you think of that person, that place and beyond.
