Music Review // David Jane "Five and Dime"
With acoustic guitars that pick up in the chorus, David Jane has created a lovely song which is a nod to nostalgia. If you do not think this song is nostalgic then I would suggest asking someone who is under 30 what a "Five and Dime" is. In fact, I only really know what that means because of Bryan Adams and he was singing about a time before I was born.
There are two important themes to this song and the first one comes in the chorus with the line: "Sorry I just like to be alone sometimes". I feel like it's important for everyone to have that alone time and it's not anything against anyone else, but sometimes you just want to be left alone. In this song, David Jane specifies that he also wants to watch old movie and drinking wine and I think that's something we should all do a bit more.
A whole other sort of alternate chorus exists which says: "All the time spent thinking ‘bout / Another life / When the music felt important / And the stars still shined / Ideas were the currency / And peace of mind / Felt fine, I’m just in and out of time". I do often long for the days when there were such things as record contracts, so being someone like Elvis Presley or Michael Jackson just felt like it meant more than musicians today who are all about social media likes and just algorithms I will never understand.
Among everything else, "Five and Dime" is just a pleasant song that reminds us of a different time. With the way social media is and the constant news of the world being on fire, sometimes it is good to just disconnect from all of that, take a break and clear your mind. If someone was constantly in that news cycle they might very well lose their mind because it can seem so stressful. So put on this song, relax and be reminded of simpler times when it didn't feel like we were facing a new disaster every hour of the day.
