Music Review // Ava Della Pietra "Marionette"
One thing I must say right away about Ava Della Pietra is that while she does have an EP, most of her releases have been singles and that just feels appropriate because every song she creates just feels like it exists in its own little world and is almost as big and complex as having an entire album. "Marionette", her latest single, is no exception as there are many layers within not only this sound but the lyrics as well.
While Ava Della Pietra might be considered a form of dramatic pop because she has that way about all of her songs feeling like a big production- imaging each having their own stage show- she also just really manages to take the overall idea of pop and make it work for her. Typically if you're someone communicating through music, through your own voice, it wouldn't be pop, but this just finds a way as it can feel more light-hearted and then kick into become more serious. You can tell the mood of the lyrics because they are set by the tone of the song.
At some point in our life, I think we've all felt like a Marionette. Just working a job you don't like can make you feel that way, but so can a relationship with someone who is manipulative and using you. Sometimes, yes, we can feel like someone else is pulling our strings and has that control over us, but with this song Ava Della Pietra points that out and wants to cut ties with those strings. As the chorus says "You're controlling me so easily / From the moment we met", but then there is also the line "Have mercy / Let me disappear".
There are different situations in which you could put this song. Being a pop song at its core and knowing what we know now, this could be applied to the conservatorship with Britney Spears. But just feeling like you're in a relationship where someone is only around when they need you and when things only seem to benefit them and not you, that's when you can feel like you're a puppet on strings and you need to cut those strings loose.
