Music Review // Back Seat Driver "The Mountain"

Through the piano keys, bass line and drums Back Seat Driver creates this rather funky jazz song with a lot of heart and soul.  There is just this groove to this that cannot be compared, though there are other artists out there such as Edie Brickell who come close.  It's the way that the keyboard starts and stops.  The way the bass line can feel like it is tiptoeing so carefully before it all kicks in.  And somehow, this all comes through also without the use of a guitar.

"The Mountain" makes good use of the idea of a mountain within the lyics.  At first, there are lines about what feels like climbing the mountain- though not literally- and making it through the dark clouds, just weathering the storms.   This is a good metaphor for anyone who is trying to accomplish something in their life and they feel like doing so is like reaching the top of that mountain.

At the same time, by the end of the song, there are lyrics about "I believe it's coming on down", which is about how the mountain is coming down.  In this way, I look at the mountain not as being something you're climbing but rather something you're trying to overcome in the way of a mountain of debt or just a giant stack of papers sitting on your work desk.  The idea of it coming down feels like it's shrinking which means you won't have as much stress and headache to deal with soon.

Whether you feel like you're trying to climb a mountain or just want the weight of the world off of your shoulders, Back Seat Driver has created a song to help you and it can really feel like a religious experience.  With a distinctive uplifting vibe, this does feel like something you could hear in a church but also more like the church of life because we've all been down before and this song could be that help you need in getting back up.
