Cassette Review // Megafortress "Adversary"

When this cassette first starts it feels like it has a screech which can turn into this Indian vibe, but also there is a bit of just that old fashioned keyboard work coming in with these moderately paced beats.   Somewhere between "Alias" and those loud keys which can be on the somewhat sharp side, this just feels like a party.   We hit this moment where it feels like everyone says something in unison as the music stops only the vocals aren't quite vocals.   This turns into the grinding of guitars as the first piece fades out.

On the next song acoustic percussion paves the way for beats.  This brings some horns with it, which sound like saxophones but definitely have that snake charmer way about them.  The intensity kicks in.  As this one horn goes into a solo it has a nice sort of video game way about it as well now.  The looping on this just hits a groove and it's easy to become somewhat hypnotized by it.

The third track brings us into a more straight forward version of techno.  This is a lot of percussion with the occasional synth type sound coming in, but this just feels like someone playing a drum kit and a drum machine at the same time in a fast paced manner.  It slows down now and the beats get a little bit funky.  This comes back to the way it sounded at first and then fades out to take us to the end of the first side.

On the flip side we begin wth a wild energy off that saxophone and a bass line.  Primal screaming comes in as well, and this one is just taking off.   A slow, creeping vibe brings this to life as it feels like we are slowly moving.  Distorted screams come through and there is something really trippy about this all now, like a feverdream or PTSD.   As that fades out we are propelled through synth into the next song.

Fast beats come on next, like a pinball machine at hyperspeed.  Synths wind and moan through this as well.  Those tones sound like they're making words and then others come through like screeching tires.  Laser shots are being fired through all of this now.   It gets a little bit more bass now and also sounds like a rattle.   This picks up and then ends right on the last note, as opposed to fading out like the other songs have.

A slow build now, rather chill now going into this last song compared with the others.  That horn comes through.  This does feel like we could go into a song by The Who now.  A high note is hit and it kind of stings.  This horn is just leading the charge as an ambient air is behind it.  No beats on this song.   This can also sound like keys to where it's almost a car horn.   But they can also sound like church organ tones.  This is such a somber way to end this cassette, but it feels final.
