Music Review // Dumb Crush "Get Away"
Dumb Crush are back with their second single, "Get Away", and from The Offspring to Lenny Kravitz, who hasn't had these feelings before? I like the idea behind this song being about wanting to get away, as in leave and go some place different but there are also vibes (included in the music video) of it being about a get away in the sense of driving like the movie "Baby Driver". This all comes to a head with the music itself which will just make you want to put the pedal to the metal.
With the song "Get Away", Dumb Crush really reminds me of the type of band that would come out in the mid to late 1990's and have that sound where they were on the radio, kind of fit in with the grunge/post grunge idea but weren't 100% the same as all that. I'm thinking artists like Bloodhound Gang and Len, though Dumb Crush may not sound like them exactly you just have to imagine it compared with the type of rock music which is not only on the radio but also widely popular in modern times.
While the music video has band members wearing ski masks and it feels like they're loading into the van to make a get away- as in a bank robbery or perhaps a jewlery heist- I think that this is also in ways symbolic of the touring band. Most shows aren't played within the same state (except larger states like Texas, California, etc) so you have that idea after the show of getting across state lines like you're running from Johnny Law but you're really just trying to get the most out of the night, the momentum and the energy.
Dumb Crush has some interesting lyrics within this song as well. Just lines like "I'm Kid Rock but woke" make me think about the times when Kid Rock seemed to be anti-establishment. And then there is also the line "And when I close my eyes / I dream of angels working at a Five Guys", which I don't fully understand but shout out Five Guys. From those Pixies-esque notes to the faster paced end of the sound that leads into a guitar solo, Dumb Crush will be the perfect soundtrack to whatever way you need to get away.
