Music Review // Superstar Crush "Fire Escape"
The instant energy and rush you can get from listening to this song by Superstar Crush should be enough of a reason to listen to it as often as possible. Fast paced, this comes in with what can sound like keys but might actually be axylophone (or both?). Elements of Schatzi, Zolof the Rock & Roll Destroyer, Save Ferris, a little bit of Fall Out Boy and The Rocking Horse Winner all come together to make this sound of pure pop punk.
With duet vocals this song can feel a bit confusing within the lyrics. There is a line that says "Will you marry me? Just check no or yes" which makes it feel like one person is interested in the other person romantically. But prior to that, the lyrics say "There's no fire escape line / "Is that bad?" Sammy said / It's just bad enough". This takes us into a line which is repeated that says "I can feel it, there's no fire".
I feel like this could be misunderstood- even by me- because to have that fire seems like it should mean to have that passion in that connection with someone else. But when you really think about the fire escape and what that means, then you can see this in a different way. That "fire" can be a red flag, where it's people lining up to get away from you because of it. If someone has fire and you're near a fire escape you, uh, escape.
So I feel like this is really just one of those songs where you can think of the fire as being something you run away from (because only firefighters run toward the fire) but it should also give you something worth thinking about under the guise of a pop punk gem. There is also this way in the song where the guitar kind of rambles and sounds like an alarm, which is just so fitting for those who need to hear it and head to the fire escape.
