Music Review // Slightest Clue "Jamie"

There existed a time back in the 1990's and going into the early 2000's even when music which sounded like this was more available.   It's this combination of grunge and riotgrrrl that just makes me long for those days but also it's a reminder that there are bands out there now still who are in a rock and pop punk way which can sound similar to Slightest Clue but just are not the same.  This song is really a sound which makes me feel nostalgic while carving out its own sound.

Artists such as Veruca Salt (because of the fuzz and energy), The Breeders (because of the overall pacing and the guitars) and L7 (because of the rebellion and fuzz) all seem to come together along with something modern, something new.  But this is also something that's missing music a lot these days: it's a story  It's not just a flat out message about something, but rather you listen to the entire song and you will find that message.

At first, we have lyrics such as "He owns me / We're so lonely / And can't control it / It's hopeless / I know that he knows it".  This is just that type of feeling of someone being in a controlling and abusive type of relationship.  Maybe they realize it, maybe they don't, but it's just that feeling in some ways too of being controlled but being okay with it because you think you're in love with this person, this Jamie.

By the end of the song, you'll find lyrics like "Jamie's not there to catch you / it's the hard truth" and "he always proves me wrong", just showing that this other person learned their worth and decided to leave Jamie behind because they were no good together.  I love that this is a story and not just a straight up warning without context.  Whether you're willing to admit it or not, this might be a story that you need to hear.
