Music Review // Jon Stancer "I Don't Mind The White Noise"

In a world where we have access to so much information all of the time, sometimes it can be difficult to avoid it.   I have this theory that many modern films and television shows were created as background noise- where if you scroll your phone during them you'll be fine, but if you actually give them 100% of your attention you'll find them to be lacking substance.  This is certainly explored within this new song by Jon Stancer, who seems to not only acknowledge this but also sing the title, "I Don't Mind The White Noise".

Some of the lines within this song get right to the heart of the medical matter.  Lines like "I'm just trying to stay focused" and "You've got my attention whatever will you do?" both seem to point the finger in the direction of ADHD.  As this song also mentions sleeping with the tv on, I know for a fact that is something that people with ADHD do.  It is in this way that if you have ADHD you will certainly be able to relate with this song.

But I also find these lyrics to be about something more than just one singular thought pattern.   "I Don't Mind The White Noise" seems to be about multiple thought patterns simply because of how much is given to us at a single time and throughout a single day.  I enjoy the line "Don't you know it's all clickbait?" because it feels like every screen is just there to try and gather data and sell us something.  It can be overwhelming to the point where you feel like being in complete silence and total darkness is unsettling and you need that light and sound.

Between the melodic rock of someone like Elliott Smith or The Get Up Kids, Jon Stancer does a terrific job of creating a song which can be easy on the ears so that the message can get through without anyone feeling like the music is too loud or just not that genre.  This is that type of song I think everyone can nod their head along with at the very least, both because of the tempo and because of the message.  You might not have been born into the multiple screens generation, but you're still apart of it right now and more people need to talk about that.
