Music Review // Raphaela "Leave Him First"

 

Through smooth pop melodies and a dash of country, Raphaela brings out the important lesson on "Leave Him First" of knowing when someone is not going about life the right way.  During this song, Raphaela sings about a man who did her wrong and left her for another woman.  As the lyrics say: "Oh so the story goes / He promised me love / Then found your heart".  Now, I definitely believe that people are meant for certain people but it has to be the right way.

During this song you just get that feeling like the man- who isn't even really a character in the story- is just jumping from relationship to relationship, starting a new one before the previous one even ends.  A lot of what this song comes down to is that the person singing it has gone through something that they don't want the next person to go through as well.  It's that idea of "he did this to me, so he'll do it to you too".

Sometimes relationships don't work out and that's okay.  Sometimes these people in our lives come and go, maybe just so we can write a song about them.  And yes, I understand that maybe this man leaves the first person for the second person and the second person might be who he is supposed to be with in the end.  But if you can't be honest and say you don't think you're right for each other, then you're probably not ready for that big of a relationship yet.

A pop song with big keys, a synth break down and even a bit of a Wilson Phillips feel, the chorus says: "Don't believe his words / I hope you leave him first".   This song is for all of the people out there who end up in a relationship because their new partner cheated on their old partner with them and they think that won't happen to them.  It will happen to you and if it doesn't, that's still not the type of person you should be with.  Listen to this song and take these words to heart from experience.
